Almost a ton and a half of mulch we trucked in the other day to supplement the garden and smother the weeds. Pinellas County offers mulch free to anyone who comes to haul it, processed from collected yard waste from the county. Compared to the cost of purchasing mulch, and the fact that they are recycling on a massive scale, it is a good deal monetarily and a good deal for the environment. Such a use of taxpayer dollars seems a positive contribution to the people.
It will take a lot more than those 3 loads to cover the yard since we still have an extensive mat of weeds to cover. In order to smother growth, I’ve read recommendations that you put a 6+ inch layer of mulch over whatever you’re smothering, but we would need far more than that in order to smother it so deep. The majority of the side yard needs to be covered and will probably require at least 3 more loads of its own just for a base layer, not counting the space outside the fence.
The coolest part about the free mulch is that if you go during the right hours to the location we use, you don’t even have to load the free mulch yourself (which would take a long time!) but instead they have some good ol’ tonka toys to just drop it right in the back of the pickup, piled high for you to slap a tarp over and take home.
